Welcome message from the Chairman of DFSC
The Southern District is the largest of the four districts on Hong Kong Island, measuring around 4000 hectares. It has a population of about 280,000 living in large public housing estates, private housing, tenement houses, village houses, as well as the fishing vessels berthing in the typhoon shelter. In addition, the District has a busy industrial and commercial area and extensive country parks. The Southern District is a blend of the old and the new, the East and the West, with high-rise buildings and lush greenery. At the same time, these features also make fire prevention efforts in the Southern District more complicated and diversified.
Since its establishment, SDFSC has been actively promoting fire safety culture and enhancing the awareness of building management organisations and the public on disaster and emergency preparedness. SDFSC has been working closely with the Fire Services Department in organising various educational and publicity activities, including Fire Safety Carnival cum Fire Station Open Day, Hong Kong Island Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Day, Visit to the Fire Service Facilities, Fire Safety Children Pioneers, Fire Safety Week, publicity campaigns on hill fire prevention, fire drills, Fire Safety Parade, and publicity campaigns on “Three Basic Skills on Emergency Preparedness”. These activities have been well received and effective.
Looking ahead, we will organise more education and publicity activities to enhance the capability of the Southern District in responding to dangers or emergencies. We look forward to your co-operation with us in enhancing fire safety in the Southern District to make it a nice and safe place to work and live in.
