Welcome message from the Chairman of DFSC
As the Chairperson of the Outlying Islands Fire Safety Committee, I am delighted to introduce our efforts in promoting resident safety and community fire prevention.
The Outlying Islands are located in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, including Hong Kong International Airport and various outlying islands such as Lamma Island, Cheung Chau, Lantau Island, Peng Chau, etc. Each island has its unique geographic environment and community structure, requiring tailored strategies and measures in fire prevention work.
To effectively carry out fire safety initiatives, the committee has established various districts, each with a local convenor possessing community experience responsible for organizing fire prevention activities within their respective areas. These activities include fire drills, fire safety lectures, and regular inspections and maintenance of firefighting facilities. Through these efforts, we not only enhance residents' awareness of fire safety but also strengthen the community's emergency response capability. For example, the recent fire drill held in Tai O stilt houses was a highly effective demonstration of our efforts.
Additionally, we regularly conduct spring and autumn ceremonies to raise awareness of wildfire prevention. Every December, we organize the Outlying Islands Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Carnival, where various emergency response teams like the Civil Aid Service, Auxiliary Medical Service, and Red Cross participate, showcasing their equipment and skills. These activities not only provide crucial fire safety and emergency knowledge but also promote cooperation and collaboration among different emergency teams.
The committee is committed to exploring innovative ways to enhance fire safety awareness and knowledge. For instance, we incorporated local characteristics into a picture book story, creating the "Outlying Islands Firefighting Story" picture book. Furthermore, last year, we established Hong Kong's first AED-covered Family Trail in Lamma Island to improve the chances of life-saving in emergencies for local residents and visitors. These innovative initiatives demonstrate our dedication to providing comprehensive fire safety and rescue services.
In the future, we will continue to strive for efficient fire preparedness and emergency response while continuously exploring innovative ways to enhance community fire safety awareness and emergency skills. We look forward to collaborating with every resident, emergency response teams, and relevant departments to collectively build a safer and more harmonious Outlying Islands community.
